The story opens with a flashback of Cassie Sullivan's dad, when he was a kid on a school field trip to a planetarium. Unlike the first two books, the book received mixed-to-negative reviews from critics, who criticized the ending. The Last Star concludes the story of 16-year-old Cassiopeia "Cassie" Sullivan, battling against the aliens that have invaded Earth.
