Once you’ve placed it where you want, if your subject is moving, you’ll have to manually track the position of the magnifier. To create this look, simply drag and drop the effect on your subject and play with the scale and size of the magnification accordingly. The Magnify effect can add to your distorted reality with a hint of realism. This simple, crazy effect, will give you that distorted feature look, whether it’s your actor’s entire head, eye, or mouth. This should blur the eyes of your subject, but if you duplicate the layer, then delete the Compound Blur from the clip on Track 2, then change the blend mode to Multiply. This should sharpen the image enough to appear in focus. So under the Compound Blur effect, increase the Maximum Blur, minimizing the contrast of your shot. If you’re ever filming a dream sequence, this is an excellent, effective technique for adding a bit of surrealism to your scene. The Compound Blur effect is a great way to give your actors a “heavenly glow”-like aura. Don’t be afraid to play around with the keyframes once you’ve decided on a particular style. This tool and section of the Effects Panel is basically just further customization capabilities for making unique animations and fonts for whichever theme your video needs. This effect is basically meant for stylizing text and titles for your next project. The Amount, Radius, and Threshold will allow you to control how much sharpness you’d like to apply, the width of the added sharpness, and which part of the image will sharpen. After doing this, you’ll be able to control the sharpness much better.


So, while in Premiere, open up the Unsharp Mask Effect. With the sharpen turned on, the out-of-focus area will appear grainy.

However, as Jordy points out in the video, this will sharpen the entire image, so if you’re shooting with a very shallow depth-of-field, most of the image might be out of focus. You’ll be able to sharpen the image in-camera with the picture profile settings.
